Moving Tips
Whether you're going to hire a moving company to do the work for you or rent a moving truck yourself, it is important to pack and label
all your items properly. This will make unpacking and unloading easier when the moving service reaches your new apartment. Follow these simple guidelines
to get the job done right:
- Start packing well in advance of your move date. Pack the items you use the least first and then pack other items as your move data appraches.
- Pack one room at a time and organize and label your boxes to make them easier to place when you arrive at your new apartment.
- Mark Fragile items VERY clearly so that you or your moving company will know to take special care of them.
- When packing heavier items, like books, use smaller containers when possible. You don't want to have really heavy boxes to carry.
- Make sure that the bottoms of all your moving boxes or moving containers are taped very securely.
- It's best to take all very high value and personal items with you instead of packing them. Jewelry, Personal papers, Cash, etc. should all be taken with you!
- DO NOT pack hazardous chemicals or flammable materials. Take those with you as well.
Moving Checklist
In addition to packing and loading properly there are some things you must remember to do to make your move go as smooth as possible.
Here is a moving checklist to help you remember:
- Complete a change of address form at the post office.
- Make sure to reserve a rental truck or hire a mover well in advance of your move date.
- If you are moving to a new city, make sure to take copies of all medical records with you and also
to setup a checking account in your new city.
- Make sure you make an inventory of your belongings before you move - especially if you use a moving service to help you.
- Call to have your utility services switched to your new location. You can also use ConnectUtilities.com to do this for you. It's fast and easy.
- Before leaving your old home, double check to make sure all closets, shelving, etc. are empty.
- If you're moving out of an apartment, make sure it is clean so that you will get your depsoit back.
